Juliana's Illuminations
These are my SCA Illuminations, or award scrolls. This page is to record my efforts and
hopefully I'll see progress in my work. Hope you enjoy & please be gentle with my efforts.
Gouche paint on pergamenta, June 2008. This illumination is based on a warrior from the Bayeaux Tapestry and was given
as a golden alce scroll. Calligraphy by Lady Anlaith ingen Trena.
Gouche paint on pergamenta, July 2007. This illumination is based on a Visconti Hours piece and was given as a Court Barony scroll.
Gouche paint on pergamenta, June 2007. This illumination is based on a Visconti Hours piece, and is a sycamore for my friend (and wonderful
calligrapher) Lady Anlaith ingen Trena. The calligraphy is by THL Gianna di Aurelio and
the wording is by Master Valgardr Gunnarsson.
Gouche paint on pergamenta with gold gilding, April 2007. This illumination is based on the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Codex
Amerus. The calligraphy is by Lord Bjorn bunhauss Olafsson and the praise poem is the work of Master Valgardr Gunnarsson in the
style of "The Song of Roland".
Period Pigments on Vellum, Jan-Feb 2007. This illuminated letter is based on folio 3r
"The Novum Opus" in the Lindisfarne Gospels, also known as the Book of Lindisfarne.
Gouche Paints on pergamenta, Sept 2006. The scroll was based on The Visconti Hours, LF folio 156. My
first real attempt at calligraphy.
Wording by Master Valgardr Gunnarsson.
Gouche Paints on pergamenta, Sept 2006. The scroll was based on The Visconti Hours, LF folio 136. The
calligraphy was done by Lord Bjorn bunhauss Olafsson.
Gouche Paints, gold metallic paint on black arches paper, Spring 2006. My 2nd Black Hours Scroll, based on
folio 19. I'm not happy with this one, but it's a learning piece. Anlaith did the calligraphy, but I don't
have a finished scan of it. It was given out as a Golden Alce Scroll.
This is a scroll done in the style of The Hours of Catherine of Cleves. Gouche paints & gold metallic
on pergamenta, March 2006. This was my first attempt at a human figure. I think it turned out ok for a first
effort, but I have a ton to learn about drawing faces & human figures. I entered it into Ice Dragon 06 as
my fifth catgory of the pent. To read more, click here. Anlaith
did the calligraphy for this sycamore scroll given at War Practice 2006.
Gouche paints, gold metallic paint on black construction paper, Jan 2006. Black Hours Scroll. My first
full scale attempt with the black hours style. I like how some of the scroll turned out, but I'm not happy
with most of it. I'm calling it a "rough draft". I really love the look of the black hours scrolls,
hopefully, the next one will be better. The finished photo of the scroll is on the right, with the calligraphy
by Lady Anlaith ingen Trena. To read a little more about The Black Hours, click here.

Gouche paints & gold metallic paint on pergamenta, Dec-Jan 2006. This is my first try at twisting leaves, and I added a few
little creatures. I'm very pleased at the way this scroll turned out. I really like this style. The finished
photo is on the right, with the calligraphy by Lady Anlaith ingen Trena.

Experimental small piece. I like the leaves. :) Dec 2005
My Fourth attempt. Gouche paints & gold metallic paint on pergamenta, Oct 2005. I used this opportunity to try
some suggestions given to me by expericienced scribes. The tips really helped me & I think the work
shows it. My whitework is getting better, but it still needs improvement. (The better brushes I bought
helped.) Overall, I'm really happy with the way this
scroll turned out. :)
This is a scroll I started back in the fall. I had drawn out most of it, and had started painting, but I
didn't like the way it was coming out, so I put it up. I got it out figured I might as well finsih it, but
I still don't like it at all. The whitework came out all wrong, and I'm not happy with the gold. Gouche
paints on bristol paper. Fall/ Winter 2005
A blank I did for fun. I thought this was something different and experimented with the colors. I don't
like the way the colors came out, but hey it was fun drawing & painting it. :) Nov 2005
My third attempt. Gouche paints & gold metallic on bristol paper, Oct 2005. This is my first attempt with shading.
The scroll turned out very bright due to the orange oak leaves. The orange dried much brighter than
when it was wet, and the blue gouche did not cover evenly, even with repeat coatings. Memo: shell
out the money & get better paints.
My second attempt. Gouche paints and gold metallic on bristol paper, Sept 2005. This is a bar & ivy with whitework
scroll. This was my first attempt with whitework. I found that I needed to thin out my white paint even
more than I thought since the gouche that I have dries so quickly. I also decided I need several
smaller brushes than I currently have.
Overall though, I'm fairly proud of this scroll. The scroll was given out as Champion of
AEthelmearc scroll.
This is my first scroll. Gouche paints and gold metallic on bristol paper, Sept 2005. It was a total experiment to
see if I like scribal arts. I decided on this style, because I really like the look of the scroll, and it
looked somewhat easier. Unforunately I do not have a finished scan, as I went back after I finished my
second scroll & added whitework to this scroll.
